Sunnyhill Hostel Hongdae Overview
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Sunnyhill Hostel Hongdae, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place in one of Seoul‘s most chaotic neighborhoods. But you know what? Sometimes the best discoveries come when your expectations are pretty low. This place actually gets it right in ways that surprised me.
The thing about staying in Seoul is that location trumps almost everything else, and Sunnyhill nails this part completely. You’re right in the thick of Hongdae’s madness – I mean, you can literally hear the street performers warming up in the late afternoon, and the smell of Korean fried chicken from the place downstairs will wake you up better than any alarm clock. The staff seemed genuinely happy to help with directions (in pretty decent English, which was a relief), and they actually knew the area well enough to steer me away from the obvious tourist traps. One guy at the front desk – I think his name was Jun – drew me this little map showing which subway exit to use during rush hour to avoid the absolute chaos.
What really won me over was how they’ve managed to keep things clean and organized despite being smack in the middle of what feels like Seoul’s permanent street festival. The common areas don’t have that weird hostel smell you sometimes get, and honestly, the beds were way more comfortable than I expected – though you’ll definitely want earplugs if you’re planning to sleep before 2 AM on weekends. The bathrooms are small but spotless, which matters more than fancy fixtures when you’re sharing space. I stayed there during peak season in summer, and even with the place packed, everything ran smoothly. The WiFi actually works (shocking, I know), and there’s enough outlets near the beds that you don’t have to negotiate with your roommates over charging spots. My only real complaint? The walls are thin enough that you’ll become intimately familiar with your neighbors’ late-night phone conversations, but that’s honestly par for the course in this price range in Seoul. With an 8.1 rating, it’s clear I’m not the only one who left feeling like I’d stumbled onto something good – this place just works, especially if you want to experience Hongdae’s energy without paying Gangnam prices.

It was a separate apartment with a roof balcony and a washing machine. There were a hair drier, a kitchen, a toilet in the apartment. It was on the 4th floor, but that's ok. I liked the staff, they were helpful and tried to explain and help.
