The first Hongdae stay
Your Seoul Retreat
You know what caught me off guard about The first Hongdae stay? It’s actually tucked away from the main chaos of Hongdae’s party strip, which honestly is exactly what you want after spending a night bar-hopping through the area. I mean, don’t get me wrong – you’re still close enough to stumble back from the clubs at 3 AM, but you won’t have drunk university students singing karaoke outside your window until sunrise.
The whole vibe here feels like someone’s older brother opened up his apartment to backpackers, but in the best possible way. It’s got that slightly worn-in comfort that makes you feel at home immediately – nothing fancy or sterile about it. The rooms are compact (this is Seoul, after all), but they’ve actually thought about how travelers use the space. There’s enough room to spread out your stuff without living out of a suitcase, and the beds are surprisingly comfortable for a 3-star place. What really impressed me was how quiet it gets at night, especially considering you’re basically in the middle of one of Seoul’s busiest nightlife districts. The sound insulation is better than places I’ve stayed that cost twice as much.
Here’s the thing that makes this spot special though – the location is just perfect for actually experiencing Hongdae like a local, not just as a tourist checking boxes. You’re a two-minute walk from Hongik University, so you get that authentic college town energy during the day, with students cramming in cafes and street food vendors setting up for the evening rush. The staff genuinely knows the neighborhood and will point you toward the smaller venues where Korean indie bands play, not just the massive clubs that every guidebook mentions. I discovered some of my favorite Seoul hangouts just by following their recommendations. The whole area transforms completely between day and night – mornings are all coffee shops and bookstores, then by evening it’s this incredible mix of street food, live music, and that electric energy that makes Hongdae famous. And honestly, having a chill place to retreat to when it all gets overwhelming (which it will) is worth its weight in gold. The 8.5 rating makes complete sense once you stay here – it’s not luxury, but it absolutely nails everything that matters for exploring this part of the city.
