Stay Seongsu

You know what caught me off guard about Stay Seongsu? How quiet it actually gets at night despite being right in the thick of one of Seoul‘s buzziest neighborhoods. I mean, Seongsu-dong has completely transformed over the past few years – what used to be this gritty industrial area is now packed with trendy cafés, galleries, and those impossibly cool converted warehouse spaces that make your Instagram feed look effortless.

The hotel itself has this really understated thing going on that I honestly appreciate more than those over-the-top places that try too hard. It’s a solid 3-star spot, but the 8-out-of-10 rating makes perfect sense once you’re there for a day or two. The rooms aren’t huge – this is Seoul, after all – but everything feels thoughtfully designed rather than cramped. What really got me was how the staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood inside out. When I asked about breakfast spots, the guy at the front desk didn’t just rattle off the usual hotel restaurant spiel, but told me about this tiny bakery two blocks over that locals line up at every morning (and he was absolutely right – best croissants I had in the entire city). The whole Seongsu area has this creative energy that’s hard to describe… you’ll walk past former shoe factories that are now housing pop-up art exhibitions, then stumble into a specialty coffee roastery that takes their single-origin beans more seriously than some people take their careers.

Honestly, staying here puts you right where things are happening without the chaos of Gangnam or the tourist crowds in Myeongdong. I’d walk out in the morning and within five minutes hit Seongsu Station – super easy to get anywhere in the city from there. The neighborhood has this cool mix where you’ll see twenty-somethings with perfectly styled hair sipping flat whites next to older residents who’ve watched this whole transformation happen. Evening walks became my favorite part of the day… the industrial buildings look completely different when they’re lit up, and there’s always something new opening up that wasn’t there the week before. If you’re the type who likes discovering places before they get completely overrun, this whole area – and this hotel as your base – hits that sweet spot perfectly.
