Su’s house in Mapo
Your Seoul Retreat
You know what caught me off guard about Su’s house in Mapo? It’s honestly one of those places that makes you question the whole star rating system. I mean, this is technically a 3-star spot, but the experience feels way more personal and memorable than half the fancy hotels I’ve stayed at in Seoul.
Mapo itself is this really interesting district that most tourists sort of skip over – they’re usually rushing between Hongdae’s party scene and the more polished areas downtown. But that’s actually what makes Su’s place so special. You’re right in the middle of authentic Seoul life, where you’ll wake up to the sounds of ajummas chatting at the local market and the gentle hum of scooters delivering food. The neighborhood has this lived-in quality that you just can’t find in the tourist zones. There’s a tiny convenience store literally two minutes away (crucial for late-night ramyeon runs), and I discovered this incredible Korean BBQ joint around the corner that doesn’t even have an English sign – the kind of place where locals become regulars for decades.
What really sets this place apart is how Su – and I’m pretty sure that’s actually the owner’s name, not just some clever branding – has managed to create something that feels like staying with a friend rather than booking a room. The space has these thoughtful little touches that big chains never think of: proper hangers that aren’t attached to the rod, a full-length mirror positioned where you can actually use it, and honestly the most comfortable ondol heating I’ve experienced. The whole setup is clean and modern but not sterile, if that makes sense. Sure, it’s not going to have a concierge desk or room service, but you get this genuine warmth that’s pretty rare. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – none of that awkward hovering while they try to upsell you on breakfast packages or tourist tours. The WiFi actually works properly throughout the space, which honestly shouldn’t be noteworthy but somehow still is in 2024. I will say the walls aren’t the thickest, so you might catch snippets of neighborhood life, but I found it charming rather than disruptive. It really depends on what kind of traveler you are – if you need absolute silence and formal service, this might not be your speed. But if you want to feel like you’re actually experiencing Seoul rather than just visiting it, Su’s house hits that sweet spot perfectly.
