Shilla Stay Gwanghwamun Myeongdong
Your Seoul Retreat
Look, I’ll be honest with you – when I first heard about Shilla Stay Gwanghwamun Myeongdong, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a hotel trying to serve two of Seoul‘s busiest districts at once. But after spending a few nights there, I actually get why they positioned themselves this way. The location is sort of genius if you think about it – you’re close enough to walk to both Myeongdong’s shopping madness and Gwanghwamun’s cultural sites without being stuck right in the middle of either tourist crush.
The hotel itself has that clean, minimalist Korean style that Shilla Stay does well – nothing too fancy, but everything works properly. You know what I mean? The rooms are compact but smartly designed, with enough space to actually open your suitcase without doing some weird dance around the bed. The bathrooms are particularly well done, with those heated floors that make early morning showers way more pleasant than they should be. I stayed during cherry blossom season (mistake – everything was packed), but even with the crowds outside, the rooms stayed surprisingly quiet. The windows are solid, which matters when you’re dealing with Seoul traffic noise.
What really won me over was how the staff handled the constant stream of confused tourists trying to figure out directions. The front desk folks actually know the area – like, really know it. They pointed me toward this little alley behind Myeongdong Cathedral where all the locals eat, which honestly saved my entire trip from being just department stores and tourist traps. The concierge even warned me about the subway construction near Gwanghwamun Station that was messing up walking routes that week. These are the kinds of details that make a difference when you’re trying to navigate a massive city like Seoul.
The breakfast situation is decent – nothing spectacular, but they do a proper Korean spread alongside the usual international stuff. Coffee’s actually good, which surprised me since hotel coffee is usually pretty tragic. I mean, it’s not going to replace your morning trip to a proper café, but it’ll get you functional before you head out. The 7.7 rating makes sense to me – it’s solidly good without being exceptional. You’re paying for location and reliability here, not luxury, and that’s perfectly fine. If you want to be within walking distance of both historical palaces and serious shopping without breaking the bank on one of those massive luxury hotels, this place delivers exactly what it promises.

Location
Good location, very accessible, friendly staff
Excellent location for most historical places and museums.
The location is perfect—close to restaurants, coffee shops, and convenience stores, plus it’s within walking distance to Ikseon-dong, Myeong-dong, and Gwanghwamun Palace! The bed was really comfortable, and the room was clean. The staff at reception were super helpful and even let us check in earlier than expected, which was amazing. Highly recommend!
Clean, spacious & easy to find. Friendly staff & breakfast selection was good
Staff were friendly and helpful, the cleaning staff were always very respectful whenever we saw them. There was free laundry facilities as well. About 10-15mins walk to the center of Myeongdong.
Location was fantastic, would recommend based on this alone. Beds were super comfy. Appreciated the three water bottles they provided each day.
great breakfast but not enough staff to clear away plates and things.
Fantastic central location. It was actually pretty quiet, despite being so central. The window could be cracked open (though it was so hot and humid, we mostly didn’t)
