R Guesthouse Jongmyo
Your Seoul Retreat
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to R Guesthouse Jongmyo, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes those assumptions bite you in the ass, and this was definitely one of those times. The location alone had me sold within five minutes of checking in. You’re literally a stone’s throw from Jongmyo Shrine, which means you wake up to this incredible sense of calm that’s pretty rare to find in Seoul. I mean, we’re talking about one of the most historically significant spots in the city, and you’re basically sleeping next door to it.
What really got me was how the staff seemed to actually give a damn about making your stay work. The check-in was smooth – no bureaucratic nonsense or waiting around while they figured out their own system. The rooms are clean and honestly more spacious than I expected, though don’t go in expecting luxury finishes or anything fancy. It’s functional in the best possible way, with decent Wi-Fi (which actually matters when you’re trying to navigate a new city) and surprisingly comfortable beds. The bathrooms are small but well-maintained, and the water pressure is solid – trust me, after a day of walking around Seoul’s hills, that matters more than you’d think.
Here’s the thing that really sets this place apart though – the neighborhood knowledge you get just by staying here. The area around Jongmyo is this fascinating mix of old Seoul character and modern convenience, and being based here gives you a completely different perspective on the city than if you stayed in the obvious tourist zones. You’re close enough to hop on the subway and be in Myeongdong or Hongdae in no time, but you also get to experience what it’s like to be in a part of Seoul where locals actually live and work. There are these amazing little restaurants within walking distance that you’d never find otherwise, and the morning walks through the shrine grounds before the crowds show up? Absolutely worth the early wake-up call. The 8.3 rating makes total sense to me – it’s not trying to be something it’s not, but what it does offer is genuine and reliable. Plus, let’s be real about Seoul hotel prices – you’re getting solid value here without sacrificing location or cleanliness, which is honestly harder to find than you’d expect in this city.

Excellent location. Everything within walking distance. Even the bus to the airport was a 7-minute walk away.
Good location, new facilities, quiet at night.
Pretty much what you expect. No surprises. Good value, good location, easy walk from nearby stations. Small room but I only used for sleeping so it met my expectations. There are appliances in the kitchen if you want to have meals on site.
Easy check in, clean, great location.
Nothing fancy decent size rooms. Access to a small kitchen with microwave.
Location was great, very close to buses and trains. Easy to get around from the guesthouse. Some good little cafes in the area too for breakfast
