About this stay

Your Seoul Retreat

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard about Hanok JAE l 4BR 2Bath l 9min from Anguk STN, that name made me do a double-take. It’s not exactly poetic, but you know what? Sometimes the most straightforward places end up being the biggest surprises. This traditional Korean hanok house sits tucked away in one of those quiet residential pockets near Seoul‘s Bukchon area, and honestly, it’s become one of my go-to recommendations for families or groups who want something completely different from the usual hotel experience.

The moment you step through those wooden doors, you’re transported – I mean, really transported – into what feels like old Korea. The traditional ondol heated floors are incredible during winter (your feet will thank you), and the courtyard space in the middle creates this peaceful bubble that somehow blocks out the city noise completely. What really got me was how they’ve managed to blend authentic hanok architecture with modern necessities without making it feel forced. The bathrooms are updated – thank goodness – but they’ve kept all the beautiful wooden beams and traditional paper doors that make these houses so special. You’ll find yourself wanting to sit on the floor cushions way more than you’d expect, especially in the main living area where morning light filters through those classic latticed windows.

The location is actually brilliant if you know Seoul at all. Nine minutes from Anguk Station might sound random, but that puts you right in the sweet spot between the palaces and Insadong’s art scene. I’ve walked to Changdeokgung Palace in about fifteen minutes, and honestly, starting your morning palace visit from a hanok just feels right – like you’re continuing the historical narrative instead of breaking it. The neighborhood itself is this lovely mix of other restored hanoks and local residential streets where you’ll see ajummas (Korean aunties) tending their tiny gardens and kids heading to school. There’s this little convenience store about three minutes away that becomes your lifeline for late-night snacks, and the family running it started recognizing me by my third stay. Parking can be tricky if you’re driving – these old streets weren’t exactly designed for cars – but the subway connection makes that pretty much irrelevant. The only thing I’d mention is that traditional hanok walls are thinner than modern hotels, so you might hear some street sounds in the early morning, but I actually found it charming – it feels like being part of the neighborhood rather than isolated from it.

Hanok Jae is extremely convenient and a lovely place to stay if you’d like to stay in a traditional house. It was fully equipped with a full kitchen and it’s the perfect size for 8 adults.
