The better in DDP, Euljiro
Your Seoul Retreat
You know what caught me off guard about The better in DDP, Euljiro? The name sounds almost awkward in English, but honestly, that’s part of its charm – it feels authentically Korean rather than some sanitized international chain attempting to sound trendy. I stumbled across this 3-star gem during my third trip to Seoul, tucked away in the Euljiro district, which – let me tell you – is having quite the moment right now.
The whole Euljiro area has this fascinating industrial-meets-hipster vibe that most tourists completely miss because they’re too busy hitting up Myeongdong or Hongdae. During the day, you’ll hear the hum of printing presses and metalworking shops (this used to be Seoul’s manufacturing heart), but come evening, these narrow alleys transform into this underground scene of craft beer bars and late-night eateries that locals have been quietly enjoying for years. The hotel sits right in the thick of this transformation, and I mean that in the best possible way – you’re getting authentic Seoul, not the Instagram version.
What really impressed me was how the staff seemed to genuinely get what travelers actually need. Check-in was refreshingly quick, no unnecessary upselling or tourist trap recommendations. The rooms are clean and well-maintained – not flashy, but you can tell someone cares about the details. The beds are firm (typical Korean style), and actually, I slept better there than at some fancier places in Gangnam. Sound-wise, you might catch some street noise during peak hours since Euljiro stays pretty active, but honestly, it adds to the authentic city experience rather than detracting from it.
The location turned out to be way more strategic than I initially realized. You’re walking distance to Dongdaemun Design Plaza – hence the “DDP” in the name, which I figured out embarrassingly late – and the subway connections are solid for getting anywhere in the city. But here’s what the booking sites don’t tell you: some of Seoul’s best late-night eats are literally around the corner. There’s this 24-hour gamjatang place two blocks over that became my go-to after long days exploring, and a coffee roastery that opens ridiculously early for those jet-lag mornings.
I’ll be straight with you – this isn’t luxury accommodation, and if you need a concierge or room service, look elsewhere. But if you want to stay somewhere that feels connected to real Seoul life, where you’re more likely to bump into creative locals than tour groups, and where your money goes further without sacrificing comfort or cleanliness, this place delivers. The high rating it’s earned makes total sense once you spend a night or two there. It’s the kind of spot I’d recommend to friends who actually want to experience the city rather than just photograph it.
