small hanok west part of gyeongbokgung Overview

I’ll be honest – when I first walked into small hanok west part of gyeongbokgung, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the name alone. But you know what? Sometimes the most unassuming places end up being the biggest surprises. This little traditional Korean guesthouse sits tucked away in one of those quiet residential streets just west of Gyeongbokgung Palace, and I mean *really* close – you can practically hear the morning bell ceremonies if you’re up early enough.

The hanok itself is beautifully preserved, with those classic curved roof lines and wooden beams that creak just slightly when you walk across the floors (in a charming way, not a concerning way). What really got me was how they’ve managed to keep the authentic ondol heating system working – sleeping on those heated floors during Seoul‘s brutal winters is honestly magical. The paper doors slide with that satisfying whisper sound, and there’s this tiny courtyard in the center where the owner grows these incredible persimmon trees. I stayed there in October once and the smell of ripe fruit mixing with the autumn air was something else entirely. The rooms are small by Western standards, sure, but that’s kind of the point – everything feels intentional and cozy rather than cramped.

Location-wise, you’re basically in the sweet spot for exploring traditional Seoul without dealing with the tourist crowds that swarm the main palace entrances. I’d walk out the front door and be at the western edge of the palace grounds in maybe three minutes, but more importantly, you’re right in this neighborhood where actual Seoul residents live their daily lives. There’s this tiny ajumma who runs a breakfast spot two blocks down – doesn’t speak much English but makes the most incredible kimchi jjigae I’ve had outside someone’s home kitchen. The subway connections aren’t terrible either, though honestly I found myself walking most places just because the area has this peaceful, almost village-like quality that makes you forget you’re in a city of 10 million people. Parking can be tricky if you’re driving (the streets are narrow and winding), but the owner usually knows someone who can help figure it out. Check-in is refreshingly personal too – no corporate front desk nonsense, just genuine hospitality from people who clearly care about preserving this slice of old Korea while making sure their guests actually feel welcome.

Hotels in Seoul offer visitors the opportunity to stay in the heart of this metropolitan hub, with easy access to world-class shopping, traditional markets, and vibrant nightlife districts.
