Sangju Hotel Seoul

You know what surprised me most about Sangju Hotel Seoul? It’s one of those places that doesn’t try to be something it’s not, and honestly, that’s refreshing in a city where every hotel seems to be competing for the flashiest lobby or the most Instagram-worthy rooftop. This is a solid 3-star spot that actually delivers on what it promises – clean rooms, decent service, and the kind of reliability that makes you sleep well at night (literally and figuratively).

I’ll be straight with you – Seoul can be overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time navigating the subway system or trying to figure out which district you want to base yourself in. What I appreciated about Sangju Hotel is that the staff actually seemed to get this. The front desk folks were patient with my broken Korean and had this worn map they’d pull out to mark up with recommendations, not just the obvious tourist spots but places where you could grab a proper late-night meal or find a decent convenience store. The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a well-run 3-star – nothing fancy, but the beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are properly hot water reliable. I mean, after a day of walking around Myeongdong or hiking up to Namsan Tower, that’s really all you need.

The thing that bumped this place up in my book was the little details that someone clearly thought through. The elevators aren’t glacially slow like in some older Seoul hotels, there’s actually decent water pressure in the shower, and – this might sound minor but trust me on this – the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a jet engine taking off every time it kicks in. I stayed there during late spring when Seoul’s weather can’t make up its mind, and being able to adjust the temperature without waking up the entire floor was clutch. The 8.4 rating makes total sense to me because this is the kind of place where everything just works without drama. No surprise fees, no “oh sorry that amenity is temporarily unavailable,” no weird check-in delays. Sometimes when you’re dealing with jet lag and trying to figure out how to use a Korean washing machine, boring reliability is exactly what you want in a hotel.
