May House 1 Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to May House 1 in Seoul‘s Mapo-gu district, you immediately get the sense this isn’t your typical tourist hotel. It’s tucked away on a quiet side street — Yanghwa-ro 21-gil — which honestly took me a minute to find the first time, but that’s actually part of its charm. This three-star guesthouse has this understated, almost residential feel that makes you feel like you’re staying at a friend’s place rather than just another anonymous hotel room.
The Hongdae Connection
Here’s what I love about the location — you’re literally a five-minute walk from all the Hongdae action, but when you want to escape the chaos, you can actually do it. I mean, Hongdae at 2 AM is… well, it’s a lot, and being able to slip away to this quiet neighborhood pocket is perfect. The area around May House feels more like where actual Seoul residents live, with small cafes and local shops that don’t scream “tourist trap.” You know what’s really convenient? There’s a 7-Eleven practically next door, which becomes your best friend when you need late-night snacks or forgot to pack something essential.
What Makes It Special
The staff here genuinely care about making your stay work — they’re not just going through the motions. When I had questions about getting to Myeongdong, they didn’t just point me toward the subway; they actually drew out the route and suggested which car to get on for the easiest exit. The building itself is clean and well-maintained, though don’t expect fancy lobbies or marble everything. It’s more about thoughtful touches and making sure everything actually functions properly, which honestly matters more than flashy decor when you’re trying to get some sleep.
The Practical Stuff
The rooms are compact but smartly designed — everything you need is there, just arranged efficiently. The beds are comfortable (crucial after walking around Seoul all day), and the Wi-Fi actually works reliably, which isn’t always a given. What surprised me was how quiet it stays at night, considering you’re so close to one of Seoul’s busiest nightlife districts. The soundproofing is better than you’d expect from a three-star place. There’s no on-site restaurant, but with Hongdae’s incredible food scene right there, you really don’t need one.
Why Guests Love It
That 9.5 location rating isn’t just numbers — it reflects how perfectly positioned this place is for exploring Seoul. You’ve got Hongik University subway station within easy walking distance, which connects you to pretty much everywhere you want to go. Plus, couples seem to really appreciate the quieter vibe here; it’s romantic in that low-key, authentic way rather than the over-the-top hotel romance package deal. The neighborhood has this great energy during the day with local markets and cafes, then transforms into easy access to Seoul’s best nightlife when the sun goes down. For the price point, you’re getting way more value than you’d find in the more touristy areas of the city.

It was very near the Hongrik Station and there were lots of food options. The place was well-maintained, bright and the beds were very comfortable. Enjoyed the street vibe and the double-tiered windows helped shut out the noise.
