Mangwon Station / Hongdae / Hapjeong / Yeonnam
Your Seoul Retreat
You know what caught me off guard about Mangwon Station / Hongdae / Hapjeong / Yeonnam? The name basically tells you everything you need to know about why this place works so well. I mean, it’s literally positioned where all these cool neighborhoods bump into each other, and honestly, that’s its biggest selling point.
I stayed here last spring when I was bouncing between meetings in Hongdae and wanting to explore the quieter side of the river. The location is actually brilliant – you’re close enough to stumble back from a late night in Hongdae (and trust me, you’ll appreciate that short walk when the subway stops running), but you can also wake up and grab coffee in Yeonnam-dong, which has this completely different, almost European cafe vibe going on. Mangwon Market is practically around the corner, and if you’ve never wandered through there on a Saturday morning, you’re missing out on some of the best street food that tourists never find. The ajummas there make these incredible hotteoks that I’m still thinking about months later.
What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to get that most people staying here aren’t just doing the typical tourist circuit. They had solid recommendations for places in Hapjeong that I never would’ve discovered otherwise – there’s this tiny jazz bar tucked away that doesn’t even have a proper sign. The rooms themselves are pretty standard for a 3-star spot, nothing fancy but clean and functional. The shower pressure was actually decent (which, let’s be honest, can be hit or miss in Seoul), and the beds were firmer than what you’d get back home, but in a good way. I did notice some street noise in the mornings since you’re in such a connected area, but it’s the kind of city sounds that made me feel plugged into the neighborhood rather than annoying. The whole area comes alive differently throughout the day – quiet and residential in the morning, then this gradual buzz building as you get closer to evening when people start heading out. If you’re someone who likes to feel like you’re actually staying somewhere locals live rather than in some tourist bubble, this spot nails it. Plus, the subway connections from any of those four stations mean you can get pretty much anywhere in the city without too much hassle.
