JoongRimJae – Hanok Overview
You know what caught me off guard about JoongRimJae – Hanok? It’s how quiet everything gets once you step inside those wooden doors. I mean, one minute you’re dealing with whatever chaos is happening outside, and then suddenly you’re in this traditional Korean courtyard where the loudest sound is maybe water trickling somewhere or your own footsteps on the wooden floors.
This place is the real deal when it comes to hanok stays – none of that fake traditional stuff you sometimes see. The ondol heating system actually works (which, honestly, I wasn’t sure about when I first saw those thin floor mattresses), and sleeping on the heated floors is way more comfortable than you’d expect. The wooden beams overhead have this weathered look that makes you think about all the people who’ve slept in this same spot over the years. During my stay, I kept noticing little details like how the paper doors – hanji, I think they’re called – filter the morning light in this really soft way that makes waking up feel less jarring than usual. The communal bathroom situation might throw some people off, but it’s clean and there’s usually not much of a wait. Actually, some of the best conversations I had were just bumping into other travelers in the hallway.
What really makes this hanok special is how it doesn’t try to be anything other than what it is. The owner clearly knows their stuff about maintaining these old buildings – you can tell from how everything fits together, the way the courtyard plants are arranged, even how the shoes are organized at the entrance. There’s WiFi and modern conveniences, but they’re tucked away so they don’t mess with the whole atmosphere. I stayed during late spring and the courtyard was perfect for just sitting with coffee in the morning, watching how the shadows moved across the wooden walkways. The 8.6 rating makes total sense to me – it’s not luxury in the Western sense, but if you want to experience how Koreans actually lived (and still live, in some cases), this is probably as close as you’ll get without staying with someone’s family. Fair warning though: if you’re not into firm sleeping surfaces or you need your own bathroom, maybe look elsewhere. But honestly, I found myself sleeping better on that heated floor than I do in most regular hotel beds.

The environment is very tranquil, and the space is comfortable and spacious, making it an ideal vacation spot for families with young children to enjoy peaceful and fun family time. The overall atmosphere, especially at night, is rustic, romantic, and leisurely, making it a very memorable and highly recommended place. Sitting in the yard with a few friends or family in the afternoon or evening, watching the stars, eating, drinking, chatting, and playing cards is very relaxing. We had a wonderful time here. The bubble toys prepared by the host in advance were a big hit with the kids. Additionally, ice water was pre-stocked in the refrigerator, which was perfect for the hot summer days, showing the host's thoughtful care. The interior of the hanok was clean and tidy, with basic toiletries and plenty of pillows and blankets provided. A There are two convenience stores within a three-minute walk nearby, and the staff there are very friendly. The streets near the hanok guesthouse are not busy, and the safety level is quite high. We all felt that this place is very child-friendly and safe for young children. Very charming modernized remodel of a traditional Hanok in a fun neighborhood in Seoul. The place was definitely more "instagram friendly", but not for comfort.
