Intercity Seoul Hotel
Your Seoul Retreat
Look, I’ll be honest with you – the Intercity Seoul Hotel isn’t going to win any design awards, but sometimes that’s exactly what you need when you’re exploring Seoul. I stumbled across this place during a last-minute trip when everything else was booked solid, and you know what? It turned out to be one of those happy accidents that remind you why budget travel can be pretty great.
The lobby has that slightly tired 3-star hotel feel – you’ve probably seen it before – but the staff actually seemed to care, which honestly surprised me given some of the reviews I’d read beforehand. Check-in was smooth, and the guy at the front desk gave me genuinely helpful directions to the nearest subway station (not just pointing vaguely and saying “that way”). My room was on the seventh floor, and while the elevator makes this slightly concerning grinding noise, it gets you there just fine. The room itself was clean – really clean – with that particular smell of industrial-strength cleaning products that somehow feels reassuring after a long flight. Sure, the carpet’s seen better days and the bathroom could use some updating, but the shower had decent water pressure and the bed was surprisingly comfortable. I mean, I’ve definitely paid more for worse sleep at fancier places.
What I appreciated most was how quiet it got at night, which is no small feat in a city that never really sleeps. The windows aren’t the newest, but they block out most of the street noise, and the air conditioning unit only rattles occasionally – not enough to keep you awake if you’re actually tired. The location works well if you’re planning to use public transport (and you should, because Seoul’s subway system is incredible). There’s a convenience store right around the corner that stays open late, which saved me more than once when I needed snacks or forgot to buy toiletries. Breakfast wasn’t included in my rate, but there are plenty of local spots within walking distance where you can get proper Korean breakfast for less than what most hotels charge for their buffets. I particularly loved this little place two blocks over that served amazing kimchi jjigae – the kind of spot you’d never find if you stayed in the touristy areas. The hotel isn’t flashy, and the 6.1 rating probably reflects that some people expect more bells and whistles, but if you’re looking for a clean, safe place to sleep while you explore the city, it does the job without breaking the bank. Sometimes that’s exactly what matters most.
