The lobby has this understated warmth to it, not fancy but comfortable in that lived-in way that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere real rather than some cookie-cutter chain.

What really sold me on this place is how it sits in the heart of Yongsan-gu – and I’m talking about the real Seoul, not the touristy bits everyone writes about. You’re actually staying where locals live and work, which means the restaurants around here serve food for people who eat there every day, not just visitors passing through. There’s this incredible jjigae place about two blocks down that I stumbled across on my second morning (honestly, the smell of kimchi and pork just pulls you in), and the hotel staff – when I asked about it later – just smiled and nodded like they knew I’d find it eventually. The rooms themselves are what you’d expect for the price point, clean and functional, though the walls are a bit thin so you might hear your neighbors if they’re having a good time. But the beds are actually comfortable, and the air conditioning works properly, which believe me, matters more than fancy marble when it’s humid outside.

I’ll be straight with you – this isn’t where you stay if you want to brag about thread counts or rooftop pools. But if you want to wake up in a neighborhood where you can grab real coffee (not hotel lobby coffee), walk to the subway without fighting through crowds of other tourists, and feel like you’re getting a glimpse of how the city actually works? Hotel May Yongsan gets it right. The 7.9 rating makes sense to me – it’s not perfect, but it does what it promises without any pretense. Plus, the front desk staff actually seems to care about helping you figure out the neighborhood, not just checking you in and forgetting about you. There’s something to be said for a place that knows what it is and does it well, especially when “what it is” happens to be exactly what you need for exploring Seoul beyond the obvious spots.

  Loved the location, walking distance to the metro, many cafes around, convenience store just next door. Room with all essentials and helpful staff.

  This place looks like it has recently been opened or refurbished. The rooms are modern and clean. The location is good. After 5pm there is a very helpful staff member who will carry your bags to your room. There is no elevator. Check out is by dropping your room key in a box.
  The room is small but big enough to open to suitcases. There is WiFi, air conditioning, hair dryer, kettle and a small fridge. There is a water cooler and drawers with useful items to borrow like phone chargers in the lobby area.
