Dongmyo Hanok Sihwadang – Private Korean Style House in the City Center with a Beautiful Garden
Your Seoul Retreat
I’ll be honest – when I first heard about Dongmyo Hanok Sihwadang – Private Korean Style House in the City Center with a Beautiful Garden, I was a bit skeptical. I mean, how authentic can a hanok really be when it’s sitting in the middle of Seoul? But stepping through those wooden gates actually transported me somewhere completely different, and I get why this place has such incredible ratings now.
The garden is what hits you first – it’s this unexpectedly serene pocket of green that somehow blocks out all the city noise. You know what I love about it? They’ve got these traditional stone paths winding between carefully placed rocks and native plants, and there’s actually a small pavilion where you can sit with morning coffee and pretend you’re not surrounded by one of Asia’s busiest cities. The hanok itself feels genuinely lived-in rather than museum-perfect, which honestly makes it so much more comfortable. The ondol heating system works beautifully (crucial during Seoul winters, trust me), and sleeping on the traditional yo mattress was way more comfortable than I expected – though if you’re used to super-soft beds, it might take a night to adjust.
What really sets this place apart is how they’ve managed to preserve the authentic hanok experience while sneaking in modern conveniences where they actually matter. The bathroom is updated but still fits the aesthetic, there’s solid Wi-Fi throughout, and the kitchen area has everything you need if you want to try cooking with ingredients from nearby Dongdaemun Market. Speaking of location – you’re genuinely in the heart of things here, walking distance to Dongdaemun Design Plaza and those late-night shopping areas, but the traditional architecture and that garden create this amazing buffer from all the urban intensity. I stayed here during cherry blossom season and honestly, having a private outdoor space to enjoy morning quiet before hitting the tourist crowds was priceless. The host was incredibly knowledgeable about the neighborhood too – gave me restaurant recommendations I never would have found on my own. Fair warning though: if you’re traveling with heavy luggage, the traditional raised entrance requires a bit of maneuvering, and the wooden floors can be a little creaky if you’re a restless sleeper. But these are tiny trade-offs for getting to experience Seoul from inside an actual piece of Korean architectural history.

Guest Reviews
It gave our son and grandson the true feeling of living in a traditional Korean house.
A small oasis of cultural immersion in the heart of bustling Seoul. A peaceful and tranquil respite while soaking up the wonderful Hanok architecture and within easy public transportation to the sights and sites of Seoul. A wonderful experience!
Stepping back in time - a beautiful house in the middle of a bustling market area. The property is peaceful with all the amenities you need. Make the most of sitting in the courtyard area in the evenings - a real bonus. The owner could not have been more helpful.
The traditional Korean courtyard room is different from typical hotels, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in Korean traditional culture, as if we were in a Korean drama. The clean and tidy environment allows us to relax and enjoy the holiday to the fullest
I enjoyed my staying in this hanok hotel. It's located in the market and there are some little hotels around. It was easy to find the hotel.
The owner is a very friendly and helpful Korean woman, who knows English quite enough to communicate. She showed me around the house and also offered some snacks and beer.
The hanok itself is pretty charming. It has a bed on the floor with heating. In the bathroom there is a modern toilet and simple shower.
The place was quite clean, and there was a hair dryer. No noise at the night. Nice location to go from to the City Wall.
Lovely korean style house and the host was absolutely the best. We felt very welcomed and taken care off.
The station was close and it was a convenient location to go exploring the city. Small convenience store close by and a bigger market wasn't too far either. Definitely recommended to book!
near to MRT station
Very cosy, sweet and quiet place. Beds are korean style which is amazing and very special. It was around 0 degrees outside in winter, but beds were warm and we were sleeping good. Restroom is big and comfortable. Sitting outside in the evening and morning in the little enclosed garden, you would not know you were in the middle of Seoul.
I think it's my first 10/10 review. My friends and I recently had the pleasure of staying at a charming traditional Korean house in Seoul for a week, and the experience exceeded our expectations in every possible way. From the warm ambiance to the incredible hospitality of our host, this stay became the highlight of our trip.
Upon arriving, we were greeted by the incredibly kind and welcoming lady who served as our host. From the get-go, she went above and beyond to make us feel at home. Not only did she provide us with detailed tips on how to reach her place (which proved to be immensely helpful for both us and the taxi driver), but she also surprised us with an array of delightful sweets and thoughtful gifts that instantly set the tone for a wonderful stay.
The traditional Korean house itself was a masterpiece of architecture, seamlessly blending the charm of the past with modern comfort. The interior was adorned with traditional furnishings, creating an authentic atmosphere that allowed us to immerse ourselves in Korean culture. There are two toilets available, one has only a toilet seat and a sink.
Despite visiting in December, when temperatures in Seoul can drop to around 0 degrees Celsius, the traditional Korean house proved to be a cozy sanctuary. The efficient heating system kept us warm throughout our stay, allowing us to enjoy the traditional experience without any discomfort.
One of the highlights of our stay was the convenient location of the house. A mere 8-minute walk led us to the metro station, providing easy access to all the major attractions in Seoul. This made our daily explorations hassle-free, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the vibrant city life while having a peaceful retreat to return to at the end of the day.
What truly made our stay unforgettable was the genuine warmth and hospitality of our host.
Caring and helpful host, good location, walkable distance to metro, excellent experience of traditional Korean house (Hanok). We will definitely come back😃
